The calls to 911 poured in from staff at Camp East Montana, the nation's largest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility, in its first months of operation in El Paso, Texas. The emergencies included repeated suicide attempts by detainees, seizures, injuries from fights and a pregnant woman in pain. Data from more than a hundred 911 calls obtained by The Associated Press, interviews with detainees and court filings offer a portrait of overcrowding, medical neglect, malnutrition and emotional distress. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson rejected claims of subprime conditions, saying detainees receive food, water and medical treatment in a facility that's regularly cleaned.

About a dozen workers detained in #SkowheganME #ImmigrationRaid, advocates say
The arrests marked the second raid this month by federal immigration agents on workers traveling to #BackyardFarms in #MadisonME.
Ethan Horton, February 25, 2026
Excerpt: "About 12 agricultural workers were detained in Skowhegan by federal officers Wednesday morning, two community advocates with knowledge of the situation said.
"Officers who appeared to be affiliated with U.S. Customs and Border Protection boarded a van and detained the workers at about 6 a.m., Iver Lofving, an advocate and translator, said.
"The van, Lofving said, was carrying workers from a former motel in Skowhegan to Backyard Farms in Madison and was stopped by federal agents about 10 minutes from Backyard Farms. The van also picked up several people from elsewhere in Skowhegan, who were detained as part of the operation, he said.
"Federal and local officials have yet to confirm the details of the operation, including how many workers were detained, where they are from, why they were detained and where they are being held. CBP and Skowhegan police did not respond to requests for comment.
"The raid marked the second time this month that immigration officers have detained workers en route from the former Skowhegan motel at 137 West Front St. to Backyard Farms. "

Proposed #ICE facility in #NewHampshire won’t be built, governor says
The plan for a 500-bed processing center had drawn pushback from local and state officials.
by Drew Johnson, February 24, 2026
The Department of Homeland Security will not move forward with its plan to convert a warehouse in Merrimack, New Hampshire, into a 500-bed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, Gov. Kelly Ayotte announced Tuesday.
The proposal had drawn pushback from local and state officials in New Hampshire, while its proximity to Maine also generated rumors that it would be used to hold people detained here."

Dozens gather in protest outside #ScarboroughME #ICE facility
U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, who visited an #ICEFacility in Massachusetts on Thursday, stopped by the protest Friday afternoon.
Drew Johnson, February 20, 2026
SCARBOROUGH — "#Protesters gathered outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility here on Friday to voice dismay over the agency’s practices in Maine and elsewhere.
Nearly 100 people — including U.S. Rep. #ChelliePingree — had gathered along #MansonLibbyRoad by the protest’s 3:30 p.m. start time, according to a reporter’s count.
"Protesters chatted, held signs and flags, and waved as drivers honked their horns. Organizers lined the street with caution tape to designate where demonstrators ought to congregate and to keep them out of the roadway.
"Pingree, D-1st District, complimented demonstrators on their signs and stopped to chat with some and answer questions.
" 'Even though the surge has slowed down here in Maine, we still have a lot of activity,' Pingree said."

What to know about Homeland Security shutdown starting this weekend
By Meg Kinnard
"Only agencies under the DHS umbrella, such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Transportation Security Administration, are affected. Depending on how long the shutdown lasts, some federal workers could begin to miss paychecks." GOOD!

Another shutdown for parts of the federal government is expected this weekend. Funding for the Department of Homeland Security is set to expire Saturday as lawmakers debate new restrictions on President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda. The White House has been negotiating with the Democrats, but the two sides failed to reach a deal by the deadline. Unlike the record 43-day shutdown last fall, the closures will be narrowly confined, as only agencies that are part of Homeland Security will be affected. Still some federal workers could begin to miss paychecks and services like airport screening could be affected if the shutdown drags on for weeks.
