As I mentioned in an earlier post, the grounds of #OsborneHouse are extensive. They contain both native and exotic #trees and #plants.

Even in very later #autumn, some #DeciduousTrees still have some #leaves. I just thought that the image this one looked striking against the blue #sky.

Some trees in autumn at the edge of our lower meadow and fields. The aspen trees with golden leaves surrounded by dead spruce trees are impressive. I still have to collect some of the leaves for the animals' bedding in the next few days. We have sown some winter rye in the former potato field and will likely resow before the snow arrives. The birds enjoy pecking the grains.

A young pala pear tree in our meadow in the lower field. Bore fruit for the first time 2 years ago. Unfortunately the birds are usually quicker to pick the (still unripe) fruit. Has recovered well from the deer browsing that I treated with clay and cow dung.

Excursus:

The ancient Pala pear trees can still be found in the Upper Venosta Valley. The high, knotted trees are dotted around the landscape, often at the roadsides or on village greens. The sweet Pala pear has always been considered particularly healthy, and once used to be prescribed by doctors and pharmacies. In the Upper Venosta Valley, this almost extinct pear, was first was mentioned under the name Pilli Palli pear in the Coira Castle chronicle in 1755. It is still used in many different dishes, for example in the Christmas loaf with diced pear or the Pala pear bread (Palabirabrot). It is also very popular as a classy distillate.

A study reveals that deciduous trees’ roots remain active in winter

Until now, it was believed that the roots, along with the rest of the tree, stopped their activity and ‘went to sleep’ during the winter, but curious research published today in Nature Ecology and Evolution shows that roots do not rest at any time and continue to grow.

All the complicated details
of the attiring and
the disattiring are completed!
A liquid moon
moves gently among
the long branches.
Thus having prepared their buds
against a sure winter
the wise trees
stand sleeping in the cold.

New on my personal blog, Walking in December: Of Mosses and Memories. Noticed something interesting about the growth pattern of the mosses in the nearby park.

Walking in December: Of Mosses and Memories

Personal blog with heavy doses of bicycling, public policy, social justice, and family life.

Morning walk. The sun came up and bathed the whole scene in a lovely warm autumnal glow. It was a cold morning, about 2C. And yes, Rhona has managed to photobomb the picture (again)
