I've been looking into dbt for data engineering and wanted to flesh out what the similarities and differences were to just using {targets} - I learned lots about both of them!

I wrote up my findings in this post

Comparing R's {targets} and dbt for Data Engineering

I’m getting more and more into data engineering these days and having used R for a long time, I’m seeing a lot of problems that look nail-shaped to my R-shaped hammer. The available tools to solve those problems exist for (presumably) very good reasons, so I wanted to take some time to dig into how to use them and compare their workflows to what I would otherwise naively do in R.

Irregularly Scheduled Programming

April issue is out!

I’m tweaking the newsletter to better match what Python data engineers care about: less visualization, more data munging.

So expect a bit less Shiny and Streamlit, and more ADBC, SQLGlot, and practical ecosystem updates.

Hey all, I'm hiring for a #DataEng (and #DevOps) role in the SF Bay Area. Reach out directly to me for more info.

#Java background is a strong want plus AWS and a desire to work on #OpenSource stuff.

Arkflow: A new Rust stream processor that combines performance with simplicity. Data pipelines just got better.

Do you know of any #rstats teams who could use some help in 2025?

I'm a freelance consultant with 10yrs of experience in #DataSci, #DataEng, #DataOps, and providing #SysAdmin for related tools. I primarily work with R, but I have enough SQL and Python knowledge to get by. I know my way around a linux terminal and docker-compose file. I'm also handy as an interpreter between IT and analytics teams. Open to many types of engagements (project-based, temp staff, etc).

If you have a need or a lead, I'd love to chat!

boosts welcome :-)

Here's another nice one pointing out that one reason we need so many/much data eng is that we have frustrating tools and systems. And that managed services will abstract that away. DE will then be for customization, which is what it should be: solve the thorny, not the boring.

How soon? Well, that's always the question... but not soon enough is my snarky response. Also, "not invented here" and cost stops adoption of some usefuls.

The future history of Data Engineering

On Data Engineers and their place in a Data SaaS world. This is a narrative for the near future of Data Engineering in startups, and I think makes some interesting points. I do think the post has avenues for expansion, especially counter-arguments in the context of enterprise tech.

hey all👋🏻 finally getting around to my #introduction  i lead + manage a small data science + product team at LA county department of public health and do some consulting from time to time too  i work mostly in #rstats and #python spanning #devops to #dataeng to #dataviz and these days i’m mostly interested in putting things in #podman pods, moving my dev work back to #nvim with init.lua  baby steps in #rust and #gaming on #linux 🫡 GloriousEggroll
