These #insects have evolved alongside Pandanus #plants for millions of years, using them for camouflage and chemical compounds for their defensive spray. They can aim and fire mint-scented #chemicals that burn and disorient #predators, but green tree #ants have their own formic acid spray in this brutal battle for survival.

Rainforest wanderer – Birds in the landscape winner

‘The southern cassowary is a keystone species of the #Daintree, dispersing seeds that help sustain the world’s oldest rainforest. On this day, I noticed one upstream, slowly navigating the creek in search of fallen fruit. I positioned myself on an embankment and waited as it advanced with deliberate steps, pausing to pluck fruit from the water.'

I had my first encounter alone with a cassowary deep in the forest. Low light. Dense canopy. That low rumbling growl you feel almost through the ground and right into your gut.

Just saw a flash of black and streak of blue and red through the vines and the disturbance. Almost like a mirage. But she saw me, and didn't want me there. Not at all.

Heard her feet on the leaf litter

She didn't need to warn me again. You do you, girl. This is your place. I'll find another way out.
