Upgraded to Pop!_OS 24.04 and the Cosmic Desktop on my System76 OryxPro. Very snappy so far, A couple of little things are bugging me: Cosmic terminal has limited color options for text and background, and any desktop icons are duplicated on every screen. I only want them on the main screen. Also, no sound test button in the sound settings applet. #pop_os #linux #COSMICdesktopEnvironment #System76

My friends are divided about Cosmic stable release from Pop_OS @pop_os_official . Some of them like it for its flexibility, while the others don't like it because the UI is terrible. They say the interface spacing doesn't match, default color theme don't look good, and engineers from System76 @system76 don't know how to design good UI/UX.

After trying it for some weeks on an old laptop, i've took the plunge an switched my main machine's desktop environment from the Fedora Kinoite (KDE) to the #fedora #cosmicDesktopEnvironment, the Fedora 43 Atomic version. This time I did a brand new install, no upgrade of rebase, because it was rather polluted with lots of tests from te past.
I still like the KDE very much, but the astethics of the Cosmic DE are just nicer. I've set the workspace ...

Ich habe gestern ein bisschen mit der #cosmicdesktopenvironment alpha 7 herumgespielt. Ich muss echt sagen, für ne alpha ganz schön gut. Hier und da kleine Bugs (dock verschwindet nicht automatisch, fenster crashen aber programm läuft weiter) aber wenn das ding fertig ist, kann sich Gnome warm anziehen…

Two things I've learned about my UX preferences while playing around with #openbsd and #fvwm and watching a few videos on the #CosmicDesktopEnvironment

  • I prefer full screen apps on smaller displays. (Including laptops) I blame cell phones for this preference.

  • When having more than one window on a screen I prefer the way fvwm or cosmic handle it by changing the color on the window pane or frame. This eliminates the need for often hard to make out visually window shadows or having to tint the non active window slightly. Like Gnome is currently doing.

    • I wish there was a way to do the same thing in Gnome with accessibility features or even an extension for gnome shell.
