It’s a very lawyerly answer. The 14 people who received sentence #commutations, not pardons, were accused of #SeditiousConspiracy — a crime that requires the defendants used #violent force against the govt. But those who got commutations were not involved in the most violent assaults against on J6.

Most of the [#ProudBoys & the #OathKeepers] defendants were convicted on #sedition charges & were serving #prison terms of up to 18 years. Under the #commutations, their sentences will be reduced to time served.

The most prominent defendant convicted of #SeditiousConspiracy charges…was #EnriqueTarrio, the fmr leader of the ProudBoys, …[he received a full pardon, not simply a commutation, from #Trump].

President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of 37 of the 40 people on federal death row. He's converting their punishments to life imprisonment just weeks before Donald Trump, an outspoken proponent of expanding capital punishment, takes office. Biden says the commutations are consistent with a pause on executions put in place by his administration in cases other than terrorism and hate-motivated mass murder. Biden said he couldn't allow a new administration to resume executions. Trump will be sworn into office on Jan. 20. The president-elect has talked subjecting drug dealers and human smugglers to the death penalty.
