Now it may also help spot wildfires. 🔥 Ring’s new Fire Watch feature uses AI to detect smoke and flames via outdoor cameras, alerting nearby users when Watch Duty flags a potential fire. It’s a reminder that the most powerful safety networks aren’t always built by governments, but by millions of ordinary devices quietly watching the edges of our lives.

There’s a philosophical shift here worth noticing. Surveillance tech is being reframed as community infrastructure, but only if trust, consent, and restraint are designed in from the start. Technology doesn’t become civic-minded by accident. Someone has to decide that it should.

The interesting question isn’t whether this works. It’s how many other “single-purpose” devices are waiting to be reimagined as public goods.

A 32billion parameters, frontier level performance compatable open source #llm model. The power requirements is that of 3AC units including cooling. Serves 15-20 concurrent users. 40 households of 4 people each (taking into account actual AI model distributed use metrics and contention ratios)

40 households, subscribing at $30/month over 2 years + power (solar). Train with your own datasets.
Entire set up takes half a rack.
