Spring is truly here — the pond has its first toad spawn! 🐸 The long strings of black eggs winding through the water are the unmistakable sign of the common toad (Bufo bufo). Unlike frogs, which lay eggs in clumps, toads wrap their spawn in long double-stranded strings around aquatic plants. Even a small garden pond can play a vital role for amphibians looking for a safe place to breed.

De lente is echt begonnen — de vijver heeft zijn eerste paddeneieren! 🐸 De lange snoeren van zwarte eitjes die door het water kronkelen zijn het onmiskenbare teken van de gewone pad (Bufo bufo). In tegenstelling tot kikkers, die eieren in klompen leggen, wikkelen padden hun kuit in lange dubbelrijige snoeren rond waterplanten. Zelfs een kleine tuinvijver kan een cruciale rol spelen voor amfibieën die op zoek zijn naar een veilige plek om te paaien.
