#NewYork - Warm Places for the Cold – #NewYorkCity

The Department of Homeless Services has a policy called “Code Blue” for winter nights when the temperature drops to 32 degrees or below, including wind-chill, between 4:00 PM and 8:00 AM.

What Changes When #CodeBlue is in Effect?

On these nights, Department of Homeless Services policies are relaxed to ensure everyone is warm and safe. This includes:

- Drop-in centers are required to take as many clients as possible, within the Department of Buildings restrictions.
- Anyone in need of a place to go can walk into single adult or family shelters, without undergoing typical intake and eligibility procedures, for the night in question.
- Clients can access any shelter, not just their assigned shelter, for the night in question.
- More outreach teams will be on the streets to offer services and shelter.
- No shelter suspensions or sanctions can be carried out on these dates. Clients who have been sanctioned can return to the shelter for the night in question, if necessary."

The current conditions & forecast for the Philadelphia region is wrong. Real temperatures are between 5°F & 8°F colder than is being reported. Unsure why this discrepancy is happening. I blame the current political situation. But blaming won’t keep your shit from freezing or unhoused folks from dying of hypothermia. This plus the upcoming snow and further old snap means action should be taken if needed for those colder temps. Stay safe!

Bummed that my trip to Tokyo had to be canceled this fall, and particularly sad to miss CODE BLUE, one of my favorite security conferences in the world. Honored to have a talk accepted this year, and grateful for the opportunity to write and pre-record a brand new talk, "SBOM and Security Transparency - How it all fits together." I'll miss #CodeBlue's Kana-san and the amazing team she coordinates, and I'll miss my Japanese friends. Hope that I can join the fun next year!
