"The Last Photo"

This is my very last photo from my 2004-2014. This was the very last photo I took, that I still have. This is East Houston Street in the LES, Manhattan.

I had lost my Nikon FM2 on the trainride back. This was the backup body loaded with color. It sat for a few months and I forgot about it until I was cleaning up. The artifacts come from accidentally exposing it because I forgot there was film in it. Two pictures weren't completely lost because they were at the bottom. This, and a shot of Katz's deli on Ave A.

This holds a special place in my heart. This is the last photo.

"In a 2002 issue of “#TheFantasticFour” titled “Remembrance of Things Past,” #TheThing, the #superhero with superhuman strength whose real identity is Benjamin Jacob “Ben” Grimm, revisits Yancy Street, the fictional #LowerEastSide street where he grew up.

We get to see his childhood #barmitzvah and watch him recite the #Shema. For the first time, we get confirmation of a conjecture many a “#FantasticFour” fan had made in the past: The Thing is #Jewish.

And now, for the first time in Marvel movie history, The Thing, created by #JackKirby and #StanLee in 1961 as an integral part of their “Fantastic Four,” is being played by a Jewish actor in a #Marvel #film."

Eventually I had to venture out during lockdown to get some emergency dental work. Seeing Manhattan as a ghost town was bizarre to say the least. This was a snippet of Houston St near my old apartment.

A fitting LES/EV swan song on Houston St. This was our last year in this neighborhood. I still miss it, but like most things in New York City, what I miss has mostly changed.

And another info from the Yiddish world, for anyone interested in theater (copy/paste from the website) :

"Yiddish Shakespeare"

With Professor Joel Berkowitz and the Yiddish Shakespeare Project
Conversation in English with some subtitled Yiddish video clips

Did you know that “Vilyam Shekspir” dazzled audiences on the Lower East Side and quickly became a staple of the Yiddish theatrical repertory? For over 100 years, Yiddish translators and performers have made the Bard’s words their own, imbuing them with elements of Jewish culture and resilience. Join us on zoom, where acclaimed theater scholar Joel Berkowitz will guide us through this rich and sometimes wildly inventive part of Yiddish history before introducing us to members of the Yiddish Shakespeare Project, fresh off a series of sold-out shows. There will be time at the end for audience members to ask their own questions.

This event is free but donations to support our Yiddish programming are welcome.

#Milwaukee #LowerEastSide Alderman Brower's office has released this statement: "Our office aims to balance the sometimes competing interests of festivals and residents, especially when it comes to Brady Street. We welcome this conversation and ask residents, businesses, and patrons of Brady Street to reach out to our office and share their thoughts and opinions."

The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy left the Lower East Side and East Village without power for about a week. We were the only people who stayed in our building, and honestly it was glorious.

Community charging stations popped up in various locations when generous store owners would share their generators with the community. Photo taken with iPhone 4S.

A random moment on Stanton Street on the Lower East Side. I was most likely getting tacos across the street at San Loco at the time (shout out to the Guaco Loco!). This was taken with my first iPhone, the 3GS.
