Gluing Pizza, Eating Rocks, and Counting Rs in Strawberry: The
Discursive Social Function of Stupid AI Answers

Advait Sarkar paper for #CHIWORK

""the primary objective of such queries is not to actually receive a correct answer, but rather to obtain an artefact of discourse.. discussants collectively construct an imagined user who is deceived by the stupid answer, while distancing themselves from that naïvety. "

🤔 How should the use of AI be disclosed when it is used to write a research paper or a novel? Does it matter whether the AI improved clarity or contributed novel ideas? How does AI's involvement affect the work's authenticity?

🎯 These questions will be addressed in a new workshop at CHIWORK 2025:

Navigating Generative AI Disclosure, Ownership, and Accountability in Co-Creative Domains

Hi everyone!

Excited to share our new paper: “It’s like a rubber duck that talks back”: Understanding Generative AI-Assisted Data Analysis Workflows through a Participatory Prompting Study. We investigated how data analysis workflows can be assisted or impaired by generative AI, which include benefits to the information foraging and sensemaking loops of data analysis.

Check out the preprint here: https://advait.org/files/drosos_2024_bing_participatory_prompting.pdf.

I will be presenting the paper at #CHIWORK next week in Newcastle.

📢[CHIWORK24] Join us for an exciting new session format designed to highlight thought-provoking ideas and showcase existing work! Submit your contributions and be part of the conversation shaping the future of work🌟

i feel so out of my depth in this talk, in terms of methods and the cultures being studied. but it seems really interesting as an opportunity to view implicit socioculutral groups in e.g. the UK from insights gained from patterns identified from a more explicit caste structure. #chiwork

Reminder: this week's CHIWORK starts 15mins later than usual, (because the speaker's class finishes at o'clock). Join us for free to talk about #HRI robitics and the future of work (#CHIWORK)

CHIWORK conversation with Ayse Kucukyilmaz, hosted by Max Wilson (At 11:15 am EST) – CHIWORK

@gingdotmastodon we need a #chiwork account here :) Will try to set it up this weekend.
Next was a very important talk from Alarith Uhde at #CHIWORK on developing systems to help with shift planning in a #healthcare setting. This is such an important issue and application area, with lots of tech being thrown at the problem. Uhde's work is well thought out and essential for the #FutureOfWork in nearly every industry. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl3N88qkdm8 (5/8)

Last was a timely talk by Mayara Costa Figueiredo on #healthcare #data collection at #CHIWORK. The conversation here is focused on #PeriodTracking, which in the US especially has become particularly sensitive. The research here goes into great detail about what #designers, #patients, and medical staff should consider when creating and using these systems. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcFs9FsCWBs (8/8)
