This remarkable Blue Oak (Quercus douglasii), found on a family ranch in the Centerville area near Redding, is likely centuries old and may once have ranked among the top 10 largest of its species in California. Its massive trunk and sprawling branches speak to generations of growth in the dry foothills it calls home.

Captured with a full-spectrum camera and a 720nm near-infrared filter, this image highlights the stunning contrast between new spring foliage and the gnarled strength of its ancient trunk. Several large limbs have recently fallen, signs that this giant may be in the twilight of its life—but its beauty and presence endure.
