Ubuntu 18.04 General Support Ends, Enable ESM to Stay Protected

As anticipated, support for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS is now over — but don’t panic if you’re still using it, as this is not the end of the road. Ubuntu 18.04 ‘Bionic Beaver’ lives on through Expanded Security Maintenance1, or ESM. This provides users of the distro with a further five years (!) of core security updates from Canonical and Ubuntu developers. ESM isn’t automatic but it is easy to enrol. To benefit, you need to sign up for an Ubuntu Pro subscription — but don’t worry, this is free for regular users on up to 5 devices (more if you’re

Ubuntu 18.04 Standard Support Ends This Month

Ubuntu 18.04 ‘Bionic Beaver’ was a bountiful release that brought a bunch of brilliant improvements to the fore — but alas, the end is nigh. Well, kind of. Ubuntu 18.04 hits end-of-life on May 31, 2023 — but, importantly, it only affects standard support. Ubuntu Pro Subscribers get Extended Support Maintenance (ESM) on Ubuntu 18.04 for a further 5 years, pushing the Beaver’s true EOL date out to 2028. Not sure which support you get? Then you almost certainly have standard support. Ubuntu Pro is not automatic but something you have to specifically sign-up for it (it’s free for personal

Wenn ihr noch Ubuntu 18.04 LTS auf einem Laptop verwendet, solltet ihr auf eine neuere Version umstellen, damit ihr sicher und geschĂŒtzt bleibt. Im Mai 2023 endet der Standardsupport fĂŒr 18.04 LTS ‘Bionic Beaver’.

So I ended up putting my primary laptop's old 500GB SSD drive into my other laptop that had a 500GB HDD. Before that, I wanted to update everything and make sure there were no issues before the swap. This laptop is a dual boot with #Windows10 and #Ubuntu.

I haven't really used it in a long time (at least 1 year or more) and both OSes were way behind with updates. Windows took over a day to download and install all the updates. I then decided to upgrade my #Ubuntu1804LTS #BionicBeaver to #Ubuntu2204LTS #JammyJellyfish.

First, I had to upgrade to #Ubuntu2004LTS #FocalFossa. Everything went pretty smoothly. I just couldn't download via CLI. It kept saying "packages not found." I was able to use the updater via the GUI, however.

So after that, the old SSD from the primary laptop is in and there is of course a nice performance boost. Windows still isn't great since it only has the stock 4GB of RAM, unlike my primary that I boosted up to 12GB of RAM, but it's plenty for Ubuntu. I'll probably keep that as my main Linux system/backup for if the primary laptop goes out on me.

Ubuntu 20.04 „Focal Fossa“ ist erschienen

Nach zwei Jahren erscheint mit „Focal Fossa“ die nĂ€chste LTS-Version. Die 32. Ubuntu-Version erhĂ€lt fĂŒr die nĂ€chsten 5 Jahre Updates und tritt die Nachfolge der letzten LTS „Bionic Beaver“ an.
