Belén Rodriguez and mental health: Italy still has a lot to learn.
In our country, there is little talk about mental health, and awareness of such a delicate and intimate yet vitally important topic for the psychological and physical well-being of each of us is lacking.
It is enough to consider the numerous TV programs, podcasts, series, and documentaries produced and disseminated in Britain and the United States to realize that in Italy, encountering a broadcast that adequately addresses the issue of mental disorders – often still considered a taboo, something that only happens to others and of which one presumes to be entirely immune or a topic to be brought up in the urgency of serious news events that the media must account for – is a rare event.
Abroad, for years there have been TV programs where specialists and professionals are not the only ones addressing the subject, but also well-known figures who tell the public about their own experiences and encourage those listening to find the strength to seek help from healthcare facilities. There are innovative formats and broadcasts where it is explained what a psychotherapy session is and what it consists of, and how useful it can be to regain one’s balance and serenity. Anchorman, journalists, and hosts like Oprah Winfrey have been true pioneers in addressing the issue of mental health since the 1990s through talk shows and special programs designed to normalize the discussion around events that many people have found themselves facing in their own lives.
In our country, things are done differently, both in terms of the lack of information and the absence of a proper culture on this topic, and in terms of the public perception that, even through social media, tends to stigmatize those suffering from depression, anxiety, panic attacks, or other mental disorders, using inappropriate, superficial, and often vulgar expressions, dispensing judgments, verdicts, and unsolicited advice, pointing fingers at those who suffer terribly – and God only knows how! – as if it were a childish whim or a spoiled attitude, disseminating rumors and reconstructions sometimes lacking foundation or, worse, especially when it comes to public figures, stirring up speculations that do nothing but create confusion and morbid curiosity, as happened just hours ago regarding the news of the intrusion of firefighters and police into the home of Argentine showgirl Belen Rodriguez and the subsequent hospitalization.
Unfortunately, in addition to expressions of solidarity and wishes for a speedy recovery – like a cold – I have read many comments that deeply offended me because they were full of judgments about Belen’s style and life choices, as well as the people she associates with, absurd suppositions and theories, airy reconstructions presented as scoops, and even insults and gratuitous offenses and accusations of feigning a malaise to attract attention.
In reality, those who have experienced a panic attack or an emotional fragility firsthand know what is being discussed and possess the necessary dose of empathy to symbolically embrace those who find themselves in the same situation and do not know how to get out of it. Asking for help is important, of course, and one should not be ashamed to ask for it, but the decision must be personal or gently guided by those who are close to us and truly care about us. Because more often than not, what someone asking for help is really seeking is not pity, curiosity, or even judgment. It’s just a comforting gesture, a phrase like: “I’m here for you, if you need me, I’m here.” Or the sharing of a similar experience, the encouragement of those who have also been shipwrecked in that dark ocean, has gone to the bottom, risked drowning, but then decided to cling with all their strength to the glimmer of light they saw on the surface. And they were able to resurface.
