cpsaskYesterday started our multi day walk on the #BearaWay. We are only walking 4 days. Started at Castletownbere and went to Eyeries.
Took longer than expected. Partially because of the terrain (we live in the Prairies and it is tough to train hills) and partially because of livestock hold ups.
Today we go to Ardgroom. I’m nervous for the footing given the on and off rain.
Jason LeeThere was a visible relief when I said I was going down the way they wanted to come up. ‘The short way’.
The dad was getting cramps in his thighs & knees. I fed him electrolytes, gave him 1 walking stick for his one hand.
We double checked where they had parked & set off. Slowly downwards.
No rush, plenty of rest & water stops, we got them down safely. While at the car a paraglider flew over. 🧵3

I packed up camp & headed up for Hungry Hill.
At the trig point I first met a young couple out for a day loop. No sooner had they left, a dad & his son arrived, the son appeared first.
They’d gone the ‘wrong’ way. Set off to go clockwise from the south side, but went anticlockwise. Disorientated by a subtle route & unclear path / route tips.
Disorientated but successful in reaching the summit. The dad had early signs of heat stroke / dehydration…

Last week I went for a slow walk across the barren hillsides of the Béara Peninsula and up to Hungry Hill.
I set off in the afternoon.
A couple of hours after leaving Castletownbere I met an elderly couple who had set off on the trail from Glengariff. I was the first person they met in about 9 hours of walking.
They were the only ones I met on day one.
Day two was to be similar with a twist… 🧵1/3
