A visit to #FrenchAlgeria by Pres. #CharlesDeGaulle was cut short on #ThisDayInHistory in 1960 by massive, peaceful protests organized by #FLN. Hundreds were killed by French troops. If you've not seen the film #BattleOfAlgiers on #Algeria's path to independence, go see it now.

Today in Labor History November 1, 1954: Algerians revolted against French colonial rule, beginning a bloody 7½ year war which ultimately resulted in Algerian independence. Over 150,000 FLN militants died in the war and 250,000-1,350,000 civilians died, depending on the source.

Gillo Pontecorvo made a really great film about the war called the Battle of Algiers. Most of the actors were non-professional local actors who had lived through the real battle. Ennio Morricone composed the film's score.

My beloved and I have recently discovered the very large treasure trove of #ClassicFilms owned by #TCM that live in #HBOMax. We have feasted over the past couple of weeks on #Breathless, #BattleOfAlgiers, #LaRonde, and #AKingInNewYork. Delicious!
Generally want absolutely nothing to do with war films—exhausted by violence, torture, stupid ideas of heroism, men in general—but I’m glad I finally got around to this extraordinary movie. Exciting camerawork and a deadly serious depiction of the costs of political violence #classicfilm #movies #BattleOfAlgiers
