Florida moves to end childhood vaccination mandates. Doctors brace for impact - This seems insane. It will mean increased rates of measles, hepatitis, meningitis, pneumonia and even diphtheria and polio. https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/florida-moves-end-childhood-vaccination-092006372.html?soc_src=social-sh&soc_trk=tw&tsrc=twtr via @@YahooNews #BadThinking

Either this is a deeply ignorant optometrist or it's a fake story made up for cheap internet points. Yes, nature does binaries, and an optometrist would be keenly aware of that: action potentials (the signals your neurons use to do literally everything interesting) are binary: they fire or they don't. In fact, they reduce non-binary inputs to a binary output. All human experience is based on this binary, sort of like all computer stuff is based on binary 1/0 bits. An optometrist would know this as a basic fact.

I fully agree with what the person is trying to say, which is (I think) about gender. However, this isn't the argument. Making shit up to support prosocial goals doesn't really help, IMO.

Nature does binaries, sometimes. That does not translate into gender. Support gender-nontraditional folks of all kinds with better memes, I guess.

Shared on FB (of course) by a well-meaning and very young (under 30) friend. They don't need to feel shamed so I'll dump on it here.

This list is bananadonks.

  • The placebo effect is explicitly a denial of the existence of whatever other explanation is offered (e.g., spells, prayers, or manifestation)

  • Spiritualists might not like being lumped in with the "law of effect" victim-blaming nutjobs

  • I suspect only a person who knows literally nothing about quantum theory or research could casually suggest that spiritual phenomena and the placebo effect are the same thing as "quantum physics" (maybe they mean entanglement? Or maybe the meme creator just thinks "quantum physics" is a big, mysterious thing so obviously it's the same as everything else they don't understand)

  • No, everyone's not arguing over its name. We disagree on whether the phenomena exist in the first place, and this heterogeneous list doesn't change that.

  • If you don't try to cram at least 3 qualitatively very different kinds of things together, then yes, plenty of people (maybe a majority of humans) deny the existence of one or more of these items.

Would Legalizing Discrimination Improve Education - Friedman disciple DeAngelis thinks it can be justified if it brings free markets in a libertarian paradise. https://open.substack.com/pub/curmudgucation/p/would-legalizing-discrimination-improve?r=hcxf&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email #BadThinking
    Would Legalizing Discrimination Improve Education

Corey DeAngelis is one of the young choice bros, working for the DeVos American Federation for Children, CATO, Reason, Education Freedom Institute, etc etc. And while I can remember a time when one could have a civil Twitter exchange with him, nowadays he's followed by a fairly aggressive Twitter swarm. But he's one of the young guns in the privatizing world, a mover and shaker and "choice evangelist" that has been there to boost every piece of privatizing legislation of the past couple of years, so it's worth taking a look at some of his earlier pieces of work to get insights into his thinking.
