Spring in the Massif Central is fickle at the best of times. Three days ago, a massive dump of snow on the Sancy range followed by bright warm sunshine meant that this view lasted a mere 24 hours. Catch it while you can.

This jay was on the hunt for one of the acorns it must have buried back in the autumn. Whilst fairly common around the house (we're surrounded by oak trees, so plentiful source of food), they are shy and will quickly fly off with their squawky alarm call if they catch me trying to get closer to snap a photo. The acorns that fell last autumn are already germinating, so it found one that was already partly open and promptly flew off to eat it on a nearby branch, out of reach of the competition!

More wildflowers again from the garden today. The first of the marsh orchids has come out, this one is tiny in comparison to some more established ones elsewhere in the garden, but it was a surprise to even see it pop up where it did. Meanwhile, across the way, meadow saxifrage has taken hold. I'm pretty certain that the previous owners were so hung up about getting a perfect lawn, that they never saw any of these as they would have been immediately cut down. All of these flowers only started coming back when we reduced not only the number of cuts, but also the surface area, and allowed the lawn to become a meadow again.

Meadow saxifrage is another of the wildflowers that are out at this time of year. They seem to be able to go with the flow of the warm southwesterly wind blowing today.
