“It’s not necessarily that climate change created this storm — it could have happened independent of all the extra carbon that humanity has pumped into the atmosphere — but there are some clear trends making rainfall worse.”

Did climate change supercharge the ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ storm pummeling the central U.S.?

A relentless storm is unleashing floods and tornadoes. Here's how a warmer atmosphere and a simmering Gulf of Mexico may be making it worse.

Is climate heating to blame for Australia’s wild weather?

“Some existing urban drainage infrastructure may be ‘under-engineered’ to withstand the increase in rain rates expected with continued atmospheric warming.”

It’s not just the total rainfall – why is eastern Australia experiencing such sudden, devastating downpours?

The number of storms in some regions is decreasing, but the intensity of rainfall is on the rise. Global heating seems to be playing a key role

#fossilfuels companies that extracted oil, coal and gas that have powered our planet for decades... By 2013... just 90 companies contributed 2/3rds of the world’s industrial emissions.

Richard Heede could even pinpoint the share of those emissions for which companies existing today are responsible.

The new science fossil fuel companies fear

Researchers can now link weather events to emissions – and to the companies responsible. A string of lawsuits is about to give “attribution science” a real-life test.

#IPCC [4] on #AttributionScience:

"concerns the identification of causes for changes in characteristics of the #climate system (e.g., trends, single #ExtremeEvents)"

"new approaches have been developed to answer the question of whether, and to what extent, external drivers have altered the #probability and intensity of an individual extreme event [... T]he attribution of #ExtremeWeather events has emerged as a growing field of climate research with an increasing body of literature"

Climate change made extreme rains in 2022 South Africa floods ‘twice as likely’ - Carbon Brief

The extreme rainfall that triggered one of South Africa’s deadliest disasters of this century was made more intense and more likely because of climate change, a new “rapid-attribution” study finds.

Carbon Brief

On the birdsite Erich Fischer highlights an important graph from the new #IPCC report.

"Warming entirely man-made

Human influence not only contributed to warming since 1850-1900 but caused *all* of it, according to the best quantitative estimate. The warming would have been even stronger, had it not been partly cancelled by the cooling aerosol emissions."

* The aerosol cooling is also a human influence and mostly the same one: burning fossil fuels.
