One of many rock-cut temples in Mahabalipuram, India. 2023. These temples are so ancient that we don't actually know for sure who built them. Various empires in the region claimed descent from the builders of the rock-cut temples, but there is little evidence to confirm that. When you think about the insane effort needed to carve these places, the lack of a verifiable historical record of who built them is kind of mind blowing to me. It's a phenomenon that repeats throughout India and part of the reason why you can feel the weight of history as soon as you set foot on Indian soil.
