Apoptotic cells are known to signal to neighboring cells to stimulate proliferation and compensate for cell loss, but how? This study shows that apoptotic extracellular vesicles carrying MIF directly stimulate epithelial stem cell repopulation during tissue maintenance, and guide macrophages to induce localized proliferation.
