Looks like I spoke too soon about the Android developer verification process 🥸

When I tried to register my app, the eligible key is not what I use to sign release build anymore! So, the one I use now is not eligible!? 🤦🏽‍♂️

Android Developer Verification: Das Ende für Android Sideloads?

Die Android Developer Verification will von Google nicht zertifizierte Apps unterbinden. Liegt darin eine Chance für alternative mobile Betriebssysteme?

With developer verification, Google's Apple envy threatens to dismantle Android's open legacy

Questions remain as Google prepares to lock down Android app distribution in the name of security.

Ars Technica

#FreeSoftware developers helped make #Android what it is today. #Google set the tone at the start by making it a more open ecosystem than #iOS and others. We saw #AOSP and its #OpenSource core, and we contributed code, built essential libraries and indispensable apps for the #platform because it was more #open. Now Google wants to take that way from everyone by becoming the sole arbiter of what apps run

Keep Android Open

Your phone is about to stop being yours. In September 2026, Google will block every Android app whose developer hasn't registered with them.

Just finished a 10 hour day doing volunteer work on #DigitalMarketsAct #AndroidDeveloperVerification and related #policy things. It is really important work, especially for #FOSS @fdroidorg and more. It is quite interesting, I only wish I could get paid to do it so I could engage more. The #EuropeanCommission and others would certainly welcome more input from people like me.

#Google #Chromebook has a good reputation for #security. They let any user install a #Debian container where you can then install anything from Debian, even add Flathub or directly install downloaded .deb packages. All of this without anything like the #AndroidDeveloperVerification requirements.

Turns out, Chromebooks are more capable than I thought.

I'm still planning to switch to #grapheneos but it's good to see that Google seems to be backing down on #AndroidDeveloperVerification

#Google's #AndroidDeveloperVerification makes #Android worse than iOS because Android users are Google's product. Users attention is sold to advertisers. #Apple's business model is selling the device and integrated services, which means its users are its customers (although Apple still plays with selling their users too).

Android currently allows users to opt out of being sold by Google. Once they lock down the ecosystem, that will become less and less possible.

We have to do what again!!!? 😮‍💨
