Hungary, convoy seized with gold and millions of euros and dollars: Ukrainian general also arrested.

Hungary has seized millions of euros in cash and gold from a Ukrainian convoy and arrested seven men. All Ukrainian. The accusation is of money laundering and has sparked a dispute between Kyiv and Budapest. The money and gold were being transported in two armored vehicles of a Ukrainian bank. Hungarian officials have stated that the arrested Ukrainians had links to intelligence and have suggested that the money may have dubious origins, while Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha accused Budapest of "taking hostages and stealing money." He then accused Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of staging the scandal to gain political advantage ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections on April 12th. The Hungarian tax and customs administration has stated that it has opened an investigation into the shipment, which consisted of $40 million and 35 million euros in cash, as well as 9 kilograms of gold. It also explained that one of the arrested was “a former general of the Ukrainian secret services.” Oschadbank, the Ukrainian state savings bank, has stated that its staff were transporting cash and gold between Austria and Ukraine in a "routine trip," carried out by land due to travel restrictions for air travel due to the ongoing war. However, Balázs Orbán, director of Orbán’s political office, expressed doubts about the shipment: “Armored vehicles full of money and gold traveling through Hungary is not how legitimate financial transactions usually work,” he wrote on X. “The simple question is: who is behind this money and what should it be financing?” The seizure follows a dispute over gas supplies, in which Hungary and Slovakia have accused Kyiv of deliberately delaying the repair of a pipeline after it was hit by an apparent Russian drone attack. In response, Orbán vetoed further EU sanctions against Russia and a further €90 billion loan for Ukraine.
