Australia's grid & power pricing are broken. Last Thursday peak network fixed charges started at 3pm, and demand dropped pushing the spot generation/feed in price from +ve to to -12c/kwh!
Yesterday at 1.30pm the price crashed to -14c/kwh.
Rooftop solar is huge
The price slump was caused by incorrect timing of the peak network charge. & regulators failure to provide any way for domestic solar to respond to price slumps. Most just keeps generating. S.A. have an emergency system to turn solar off entirely & owner pays for using power they could have generated!
Friday had a -14c slump at 1.30pm -  lots of rooftop solar. They don't predict these & one bad afternoon can blow a week's feed in tarrif.
I've mostly turned off my exports. It's not worth the effort. Most retailers absorb big -ve feed in costs. It's illogical & a failure to plan & regulate.

Another article mentioning synchronous condensers for #electrical grids, to provide 'inertia' and help system reliability when other systems suddenly come up, or suddenly drop out.

I can see that spinning a large lump of metal provides a source of physical angular momentum, and that tapping that angular momentum can turn it into nicely narrowband sinusoidal voltages on a powerline - at least in the immediate/short term

How/why can't grid scale batteries and inverters do the same thing?

If we can switch large enough power sources in and out fast enough then surely we can produce or force any waveform.

Do existing large battery installations not do this thing? Or not do it well? Or not do it cheaply? Or not fast-enough?

Well the power grid in Sydney certainly had some fluctuations during that storm. At one point we were getting paid to consume power so the battery is full and the house is nice and cool.

And I'm in Melbourne... If I was home the car would have been topped up too.

AEMO says 10 yrs to run Australia’s grid on 100% renewables. Try 5. Rooftop solar already dominates days—grid-forming batteries & VPPs will scale faster than anyone expects to cover night load. Mild days at 100% before 2030? Locked in. The grid’s flipping. ⚡☀️🔋 #AEMO #EnergyTransition #BESS #LFP

AEMO puts grid-forming batteries and household devices at centre of roadmap to 100 pct renewables

AEMO’s new engineering priorities are on getting most out of grid forming inverters and consumer energy resources at it maps path to 100 per cent renewables.

RenewEconomy
Once the bedrock of opposition to 100% renewables, “baseload” is now obsolete. AEMO—the Australian Energy Market Operator—says there’s no going back. The grid’s shifting to renewables, batteries & flexible demand. Coal gone by 2035, gas fading. #AEMO #AusPol #EnergyTransition #Solar #Wind #BESS #LFP

First up: Not saying that this contributed to the widespread electricity outage in Spain and Portugal.

And I know that AEMO will be watching the post event reviews very carefully.

But it was identified in the 2020 Renewable Integration Study that there was the possibility of mass disconnection of low voltage distributed (ie rooftop) solar in response to a low voltage event. And that was of particular concern in South Australia and West Australia.

And as a result since 2020 it is a requirement in South Australia (at least, haven't looked to see how widespread) that inverters be able to pass a short duration undervoltage test.

(I've heard that AEMO are aiming to have the capability of achieving dispatch of 100% renewable electricity by this year. The current peak renewable dispatch of ~70% in 2024 had availability of renewables equivalent to more than 100% of demand, but AEMO couldn't bring it onto the NEM at that time)

I'm confused. The Amber App dashboard says Victoria is currently at 95% #renewables in the grid (the highest I've seen) but the #AEMO dashboard for current #Victorian fuel mix says there is a ton of coal...

What gives, #Amber? Which is correct?

“For the seventh year in a row, #renewables have the lowest cost range of any new electricity generation”.

GenCost: cost of building Australia’s future electricity needs

Each year, CSIRO and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) collaborate with industry stakeholders to update GenCost. This leading economic report estimates the cost of building new electricity generation, storage, and hydrogen production in Australia out to 2050.
