Why #abuserstrategy ?
Because the Kremlin's goal is to legimize the war of aggression, therefore change the norms & terms of what violence is admissible -> illiberal norm promotion.
#Ukraine

Also: Since the beginning of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine, the Kremlin deploys various tactics that align with the #AbuserStrategy pillars:
1. isolate victim from support system
2. discredit victim & support system
3. reverse victim / offender
4. terrorize (coercion)
5. guarantee impunity (courts public opinion / justice)

#Zelensky's misstep is a perfect opportunity for the #Kremlin to pounce on pillars 1, 2, 3 in order to justify 4 and 5

@PopovaProf Some of my work involves looking at how authoritarian regime propaganda, esp. RU, aligns with patterns of behaviour we see in domestic abuse #abuserstrategy in a post-Nuremberg world (Int order/law). Capturing a target's attention and maintaining its focus on the tyrant (what will he do, he CAN do that), is a big part of that pattern. It is power that we are transferring over to him, at the cost of our own autonomy and emancipation.
@Sina I think I just wrote a book on that ;)
My approach is looking at the patterns of behavior. Inferring tactics. Putting them in a broader strategy (currently looking at how RU strat aligns with #abuserstrategy).
But also, the more "meta" approach of understanding how those actors (uncivil society) socialise (epistemic communities) and persuade (inauthentic/misleading arenas, discourse, amplification on/offline) in order to contest liberal norms or promote illiberal ones.

3. #CoerciveControl is about wielding power
#AbuserStrategy is about legitimacy to commit crimes and not be held accountable for them.

In the current information space, legitimacy = visibility, or: the capacity to accumulate and retain attention capital.

This does not need to be a sophisticated process, it just has to grab our attention.
(see my interview in @lemonde
https://www.lemonde.fr/les-decodeurs/article/2022/04/09/desinformation-russe-peu-importe-que-le-faux-soit-grossier-pourvu-qu-il-capte-l-attention_6121341_4355770.html )

Domestic tyrants, for example, demand that all attention focuses on them.

#abuserstrategy has 5 pillars:

- isolate targets from their support systems (or isolate support groups from each other)
- discredit targets and their support
- reverse guilt (offender becomes *the true* victim*)
- instill terror (#coercivecontrol etc)
- ensure impunity (jurisdictions of law, public opinion).

#disinformation #Russia #Prigozhin

1. #abuserstrategy is similar to #DARVO (deny, attack, reverse victim and offender), a pattern of behavior theorised by Pr. Jennifer J. Freyd in the 90s to understand why #GBV victims are denied justice.
https://dynamic.uoregon.edu/jjf/defineDARVO.html

At about the same time, 🇫🇷 feminists from the Collectif Féministe Contre le Viol (CFCV) were theorising another version of the pattern. I find more helpful bc. it includes the end-goal (impunity), and can be extended to support groups (of the victim and perpetrator)

Just saw @shanvav citing Jack Stubbs: "all #Prigozhin might be doing is calling attention to the (albeit low key) Russian interference in order to stir up divisions in the US over whether #Russia is interfering or not"

This may be a good time to start tooting about how #Kremlin #disinformation ops and #abuserstrategy* align.

*strategy used by perpetrators of gender based violence in order to legitimize #coercivecontrol & violence + guarantee their impunity.
