Today is National Encourage A Young Author Day!

Do you know a young storyteller? Give them some tools and validation! Give them a special notebook or journal (pro tip: tell them they’re actually allowed to write in it, even though real writers simply horde them). Promote a love of reading, because reading a variety of material hones their writerly instincts.

I still remember a number of people from my childhood that encouraged my writing. I won first place in my entire school district during fifth grade and placed second in the district in third grade. Teachers always gave me space to write freely. A guidance counselor in high school promised she’d look for my name in print someday. Mom instilled a love of reading (and we still chat about our latest reads today). Who knows where I’d be today if I hadn’t had so many supporters along the way?

In case you can’t read the tiny print in my pic, here it is: “Outstanding Student Author Recognition Program, District Winner - First Place”

“We wish to present this certificate for excellence in developing a plot line, language usage, style and proper mechanics while producing a book for this program. We hope that this is only the first of many such excellent endeavors to be crafted by this aspiring young author. Presented this sixteenth day of May, 1995.”
