How Wiradjuri constellations like the Great Celestial Emu make us look at the sky in a different way

All 88 internationally recognised constellations have European origins. But First Nations astronomy tells older, beautiful stories that contain invaluable lessons and knowledge.

Yindyamarra Aboriginal Services was created seven years ago by the late and great Aunty Rhonda Towney and her son, David ‘Croc’ Towney who both saw a dire need for food assistance in Peak Hill, a remote community based on Wiradjuri Country.

Aunty Rhonda was born in a tin shed out the back of Dubbo Hospital during a time when Aboriginal Women weren’t able to give birth within the hospital. The hardships and struggles Aunty Rhonda faced in life were a driving force behind her setting up Yindyamarra Aboriginal Services with her son David, in hopes of bettering the lives of others.

The highest human-occupied #Australian rock shelter from the Last Glacial Maximum, peak Ice Age 20,000 years ago.

'Archaeologists say the huge rock hollow was a camping spot “kind of like the Hyatt of the mountains”, occupied continuously until about 400 years ago.'
..
'The groundbreaking study, funded by the Australian Museum Foundation, was a collaboration between archaeologists and Aboriginal custodians who have spent six years mapping rock shelters across the greater Blue Mountains area, spanning 1m hectares of mostly untouched wilderness west of Sydney.

'Some sites are known only to a handful of Aboriginal people or intrepid bushwalkers. Others have only just been rediscovered.'

We are on the lands of the Jagera, Yuggera, & Ugarapul People, who use the Yagara/Yugara Language group.

Whilst I couldn't confirm a local #indIgenous name or story of this grasshopper, I can tell you that Barellan in the #Wiradjuri language, quite aptly, translates to “where two waterways meet”.

This old photo shows that confluence a few years back.

Look how little my Missy was!

I've started leasing a 15ha grazing block with (in my opinion) the best view of #Wiradjuri country. #Nangar is the highest hill on the horizon. Plenty of work ahead to get the boundary fence stock proof & a reliable stock water supply.
