"Mari Lwyd, Lwyd Mari,
A sacred thing through the night they carry.
Betrayed are the living, betrayed the dead,
All are confused by a horse's head."
- Vernon Watkins, "Ballad of the Mari Lwyd."

The Mari Lwyd is a wassailing Welsh Christmas folk custom in which a troupe of men dressed as stock characters (such as Punch and Judy) carry a horse skull on a pole from house to house, at each house singing their desire to enter. Eventually, each household relents, and invites the Mari Lwyd in for food and drink.

One of the most terrifying Welsh traditions I know about is the Mari Lwyd. Has anyone ever experienced this first hand or is it a myth #wales #welshchristmas #christmas #tradition #welsh
