Energy app turns neighbours into local clean energy power players

A school in Madrid is now powered by solar panels on its roof thanks to investments from local residents. People could put in as little as €20, yet together they raised almost €150 000.The crowdfunding campaign for the Palomeras school was part of AURORA, an EU-funded initiative that uses a simple smartphone app to help citizens track their energy use and invest in local clean energy projects.

From storms to sensors: how cross-border research with UK partners shapes safer and greener technologies

On a test track in southern Germany, engineers watch as an automated vehicle drives through simulated heavy rain. As the vehicle pushes through sheets of water and poor visibility, researchers are recreating one of the toughest sensing challenges for automated driving.“Bad weather is one of the situations the car will face, and the car must deal with that,” said Professor Werner Huber from the Technical University of Ingolstadt in Germany, home to world-leading testing facilities for autonomous vehicles in both real and virtual environments.

Tiny particles, big impact: towards less invasive brain stimulation

For decades, treating serious brain disorders has often meant making a difficult trade-off. Symptoms could be relieved, but usually at the cost of invasive surgery and implanted electrodes that stay in the body for life. “Having wires in your body isn’t ideal,” said neuroscientist Mavi Sanchez-Vives, head of the Systems Neuroscience group at the IDIBAPS research institute in Barcelona, Spain. “Yet for many patients, it has been the only option.”
