Slewfoot by Brom was a great listen - bewitching in the best sense of the word. The brutality of the Puritans is hard to digest, but knowing that it really happened that way makes it even more enraging. Both Abitha and Samson make interesting characters, and for me, the story came to a satisfactory conclusion. @bookstodon #bookstodon #books #WeekendRead #amreading #iamreading
"Bloom" could have been a sweet sapphic love story, but Delilah S. Dawson makes sure it comes with a fair share of queasiness and tension about where this is heading. Short and easy to devour on a quiet afternoon.

The big old internet can look a bit quiet when you move outside the algorithmic machine, especially if you’re sharing new ideas.

Thrive in obscurity

The path to creative mastery begins with years of silence. Publish anyway.

"Maybe we will drown or burn or starve one day, but until then we get to choose if we’ll add to that destruction or if we will care for each other"

Charlotte McConaghy's "Migrations" is one of my all-time faves - so I had high expectations for "Wild Dark Shore". And what shall I say? She did it again. Gorgeous writing with a tender, powerful and heart-wrenching story. Gave me all the feels and wrecked me in the best possible way.

"It's eat or be eaten"

"The Starving Saints" by Caitlin Starling wasn't what I expected it would be - but I still wasn't disappointed by this enticing, fast-paced, vivid story of false idols and (CW) cannibalism. The second half gets a bit too trippy for my taste and I feel it doesn't quite tie up all lose ends. But it's an exciting ride nevertheless. I also liked the narration of the audiobook. @bookstodon #WeekendRead #bookstodon #amreading #iamreading #frauenlesen

Up until the midway point, "Annie Bot" by Sierra Greer was excellent - insightful, provacative and told from a fresh angle. Unfortunately, the plot falls apart a bit in the second half, but the story and the themes it touches still have much going for it. @bookstodon #bookstodon #weekendread #books #amreading #iamreading #frauenlesen

What is it that makes us human? "I Who Have Never Known Men" by Jacqueline Harpman tackles this question in a thought-provoking, yet devastating way. It isn't high in suspense and action, but instead rather quiet and reflective. Totally knocked me off my feet.

"I was forced to acknowledge too late, much too late, that I too had loved, that I was capable of suffering, and that I was human after all."

"We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law.” #WeekendRead -my new essay on HUAC, how it operated over its 30 year history, & how industries, academia, & individual targets eventually fought back.

"The biggest mystery is not why arXiv succeeded. Rather, it’s how it wasn’t killed by vested interests intent on protecting traditional academic publishing."

Very interesting interview profile of Paul Ginsparg in WIRED narrating the history of arXiv:

Inside arXiv—the Most Transformative Platform in All of Science

Modern science wouldn’t exist without the online research repository known as arXiv. Three decades in, its creator still can’t let it go.
