Having noticed the #GreatFamine in #Ireland was causing tenant farmers to lapse in #rent payment, the #IrishCoercionBill was introduced in parliament on #ThisDayInHistory in 1846. This would have allowed #MartialLaw to be declared in Ireland, since property comes before people...
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1849, #Liberal Prime Minister #JohnRussell instructed Lord-Lieutenant of #Ireland that the #GreatFamine was to be ignored as Irish "ingratitude" meant they deserved death. Remember that Ireland had been annexed and was literally part of the United Kingdom.

Context: During the Irish Great Famine (potato famine), the Ottomans wanted to send £10,000 in aid. The British denied it as the Queen had only sent £2,000 and didn’t want her to be upstaged - so the Ottomans reduced it down to £1,000.

One of the more offensive things about both the #GreatFamine in #Ireland and the many atrocities committed there involves its legal status. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1801 it joined fully the union of the #UnitedKingdom, meaning those slaughtered and starved innocents were citizens.
Given the events of #Black47 in the #GreatFamine, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1847 a Dublin paper, the Nation, said it could not wish readers of #Ireland a #MerryChristmas, only its best wish "that no future Christmas shall ever find her so abject, so miserable, so enslaved as this."
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1847, the British army's #FortyNinthRegiment enforced a #MassEviction requested by vile #landlords against tenants already devastated by the #PotatoBlight. As if the #GreatFamine wasn't bad enough, 102 families in #Mullaroghe, #Ireland, lost their homes.

"Padraic Scanlan’s Rot: A History of the #IrishFamine doesn’t seek to overturn this consensus but Scanlan’s central claim is in some ways an echo of Mitchel’s: although #Ireland was part of the United Kingdom, it was, he writes, ‘imagined, governed and exploited in strikingly colonial ways ... The famine – a complex ecological, economic, logistical and political disaster – was a consequence of colonialism.’ "
