My colleagues published the AIFS ensemble system and the loss function design is genuinely clever.
AIFS-CRPS trains a stochastic weather model using the Continuous Ranked Probability Score as its loss. It generates as many ensemble members as needed and outperforms the physics-based IFS ensemble for most variables and lead times. No blurring, realistic variability throughout.
Proper scoring rules as training objectives -- an idea with legs beyond weather.
