My colleagues and I published the system I've been building at ECMWF.

AIFS combines graph neural networks with a sliding window transformer, trained on 40 years of ERA5 data. It produces 10-day forecasts in about 2.5 minutes on a single GPU, runs four times daily alongside the physics-based IFS, and is publicly available under ECMWF's open data policy.

Ensemble weather forecasting is where skill meets uncertainty.

PoET uses hierarchical transformers to calibrate each ensemble member individually rather than treating the ensemble as a blob. It brings up to 20% improvement for 2m temperature globally and works across different ensemble sizes without retraining.

Proper post-processing that respects what an ensemble actually is.

This is the first side-by-side comparison of ML-generated forecasts against operational NWP, initialized from identical conditions. PanguWeather matches the IFS for global metrics and extremes, though smoothness and bias drift remain open problems.
