In 1978 Ono Tomoyuki (小野友之), a graphic designer, created the 'cube watermelon' (四角スイカ).

Designed to be easier to cut up and better fit in fridges, the cost of producing each fruit (grown to fill a box) makes them 3 or 4 times more expensive than normal watermelons🧊🤔
