New term from @levijohnwolf: "whig replication".
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/23998083241296444

"[We could always] view new work as…replication of [past work]…We…stand on the shoulders of giants yet build ever upwards towards a better understanding…I call this #whig #replication…by analogy to “whig history” [which] sees the present as…more…ethical or enlightened…than the past…Whig replication is…progressive…about the ability of science to…improve…but…conservative in [protecting] knowledge from direct…re-examination."

The Morning Post reports on the UK General Election in #Huntingdonshire where #Whig candidate Lord John Russell (future #PrimeMinister 1846-52 & 1865-66) employed ‘London Pugilists’ to keep the polling station open so ‘agents’ could gather more voters from the countryside to increase his numbers.

Karl #Rove played a leading role in the lead-up to the #IraqWar.[45][46] In 2002 and 2003, Rove chaired meetings of the #WhiteHouseIraqGroup (WHIG), an internal White House working group established in August 2002, eight months prior to the 2003 invasion of #Iraq. #WHIG was charged with developing a strategy "for #publicizing the White House's assertion that #SaddamHussein posed a t#hreat to the #UnitedStates.".[47]
A #republican lie of course

@Tony_Meredith Sheryl Craig & Janine Barchas have documented the political context & other #CharacterNames convincingly, but although the characters of #EdmundBurke & the fictitious #CatherineDeBourgh are discussed, & other #Whig names make political references clear, I have not seen the name discussed explicitly.
Modern readers may not realise that these are variant spellings? but there were Irish #Burgh & #Burke peers in Jane’s time, both using variants of the original Burgh arms.
