Wasps are not generally considered "charismatic" insects, but my sister's love of them, and all the time she spends watching the various pollinators, has taught me to look closer as well. I'm pretty sure that this one is a yellow-legged mud-dauber wasp, sceliphron caementarium. #insects #wasps #pollinators
For #insectSaturday / #insektenSamstag - absolute goth wasp, spotted on an old stone gatepost last weekend, taking a very brief rest while (presumably) hunting crab spiders. Probably from the Pompilidae:

A Jewel of the Microfauna
During my walk through Riddagshausen, my attention was drawn to some tiny wasps moving with great speed across some dry, fallen logs. As the sunlight struck them, their bodies gleamed intensely—like tiny flashes of color against the wood. Given their hyperactive behavior and dazzling iridescence, all signs point to these being specimens of the cuckoo wasp family (Chrysididae)—jewel-like insects that specifically utilize dead wood to seek out the nests of their hosts.

Buenas albas.

Galls of the Wool Sower Wasp (Callirhytis seminator).

This species only lays it eggs on White oak (Quercus alba).

The wasp larvae will emerge from this cotton candy like gall with no harm to the Oak tree.
