Vote Forward Evolution: A Deeper Dive · Vote Forward

Join our Vote Forward staff and our volunteer community as we announce **Vote Forward's latest evolution from primarily a letter-writing program into a hub for volunteer-driven action that strengthens our democracy.** Nine years ago, Vote Forward started with a single question: Can a handwritten letter from a stranger move someone to vote? And the answer turned out to be yes! Over the years, we’ve continued to ask hard questions about voter outreach, follow the evidence, and work together to understand what we’re learning while driving millions of people to the polls. **The work we have done so far has been possible because of people like you, who have remained the heart and soul of Vote Forward.** In June 2025, Vote Forward published the results of the 2024 program — including the parts that were hard to share. Letters to a large group of occasional voters in 2024 produced no measurable increase in turnout. A smaller group of low-propensity voters saw a modest boost, but the overall impact was significantly smaller than previous Vote Forward programs. With our evaluation of our 2025 program in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and California, we learned more about where letters still work. We plan to keep writing where letters are the right tool, and we’ll expand the ways we do voter outreach to find new, evidence-driven, high-impact actions to strengthen our democracy. Now we think that the big challenge we face in democratic participation is not just voter turnout. It’s also about trust. Most Americans no longer believe that the government works for people like them, which makes it harder to get people out to vote. Low voter trust depresses voter turnout, and low voter turnout leads to a government that is not representative of or strong enough to deliver for the American people. That only further depresses voter trust. Latest poll has only a slim majority supporting redistricting. We need to write letters to Democratic-leaning voters who are otherwise unlikely to vote in November.
