The Department of Education exists to protect students’ rights and ensure equal access to education. But that mission is being undermined. As NPR reports, recent mass firings and operational failures at the Department have left thousands of civil rights complaints backlogged or unresolved, raising serious concerns about whether the agency can still fulfill its legal responsibilities. According to a Government Accountability Office review cited by NPR, staffing cuts and internal disruptions have slowed investigations into discrimination based on race, disability, sex, and language access. These aren’t abstract bureaucratic problems. They affect real students and families who depend on federal enforcement when their rights are violated. When an agency charged with protecting civil rights can no longer do its job, Congress has a duty to intervene. Oversight is essential to determine how these decisions were made, what impact they are having, and how to restore the Department’s capacity to serve students nationwide. Lawmakers must hold hearings, demand transparency, and ensure the Department of Education is properly staffed, funded, and able to carry out its core functions.
