Scandinavian warships were characterized by a wide square sail and a clinker-planked structure, which ensured flexibility and strength during navigation on the high seas.
The construction of these hulls required considerable resources in terms of selected timber and metallurgy for the production of rivets. As the Viking Age progressed, a functional specialization of vessels occurred, with an increasingly clear distinction between langskips (warships)
and knörrs (cargo vessels).
