Day 4 of #DecemberAdventure
Dear diary, today I learned about the horrors of video game programming in the 1980ies. I tried to come up with a way to proceduraly generate the doors between the rooms in my dungeon, but had to fidget with the constraints of TinyBASIC.
Some more notes on that: https://codeberg.org/thgie/sunflower-coincrawler#2025-12-04
It was painful, and I actually gave up on trying to solve this at one point. Took a break and floated around in the lab for a bit, came back to it, and somehow it worked out. Haven't had such a gnarly thing to solve in a while and it felt quite good, once done.
Walking through the dungeon is also way more interesting now. I already encountered a bunch of different map configurations and can see how this will be fun to work with.

I'm doing a research residency at the Technoculture, Art and Games (TAG) Research Centre in Montéal, which is led by the fantastic Rilla Khaled and Mia Consalvo. During that time I'm part of the "Games as Research" working group and we do a lot of thinking and tinkering around how to document the knowledge inherent to design processes. Compared to analysing just the final outome. These doings feed into the "Materializing Design Methodology".

Technoculture, Art and Games (TAG) is an interdisciplinary centre for research/creation in game studies and design, digital culture and interactive art. TAG is housed in the Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture, and Technology at Concordia University in Montréal, Canada.
