How can we get NZonScreen.com to make their video collections discoverable in the fediverse, the same way the collections on PeerTube sites like VidCommons.org are?

Community support for #VidCommons has historically been lackluster. Some of that is my fault. I've been paying into this project for years, with the hope that it might serve an important purpose to the #PeerTube community, but it seems as though no one is interested all that much in supporting it.

In the next 60 days, if I cannot find some kind of organization to help host it, I will be forced to shut it off for good. Currently, my instance is followed by 116 instances, with 104 videos (nearly 70GB) of media. That will all go poof then, should the project die.

I haven't been the greatest at taking care of #VidCommons, which is one of the second #fediverse projects that I launched after doing a news publication.

VidCommons is a #PeerTube instance dedicated to Creative Commons and Public Domain media, kind of meant to be a "content starter pack" for other PeerTube instances to gain when they follow the server. The goal was to seed the network with something to watch, even if it's just old movies and independent documentaries.

I am reaching out to the PeerTube community, and by extension, Framasoft, over the possibility of the PeerTube project to formally adopt it.

Certificate issues on #VidCommons have been fixed. Apologies for the wait, I was super sick last week and only just now got around to it!

The VidCommons Project

Big milestone: everything on the @films account and all subchannels has been successfully migrated over to Object Storage for #VidCommons. This is a process that I have to go over manually, which is annoying, but the benefit is that every piece of media I go through gets reviewed.

Many of the entries were replaced with videos in higher resolution, with better metadata. Some entries got subtitles added and carefully aligned to the videos, and in the case of the John Wayne collection, custom thumbnails were to match the old movie posters.

One cool thing that we're doing with #VidCommons now: all media contains original publishing dates in the metadata.

We also use a PeerTube plugin to sort all of the videos by the original date, so once the migration is complete, virtually everything on there will be sorted from newest to oldest!
#VidCommons update: All of the films in Feature Films, Animated Films, and Silent Films have been corrected in the Great Object Storage migration. I've also done a few neat things here and there, like boosting resolution, adding subtitles, and improving the thumbnails and metadata.

The John Wayne and Charlie Chaplin archives still need to be cleaned up, but like 80% of the movies are good now: https://vidcommons.org/a/films/video-channels

Also, this is a reminder that #VidCommons is a public service for the #PeerTube network part of the #Fediverse! Our hope is to eventually shift over to 100% user funding to keep the service going, but right now funding is entirely out of our own pockets.

If anyone is interested in keeping the service up and running, please donate: https://liberapay.com/VidCommons/
