"The influence of Paris’ banlieue on …French slang is unmistakable.

#Verlan — a linguistic process that often alters the meaning of standard French terms — was used in the suburbs before making its way into widely-spoken French. Its vocabulary borrows from various languages, such as Arabic or Romani…"

So, after learning 18th century French in #LesMiserables, one has to learn contemporary French slang by listening to #PNL rap!

How Rap and Hip-Hop are transforming France and its language

On International Mother Language Day, we look at how rap and hip-hop artists are mixing languages and spreading a vernacular that captures the contemporary Francophone world: multi-ethnic, multilingual, and shaped by migration.

Johnny est un cador: il boit du whisky, fume des blondes et joue au poker dans un tripot de banlieue pendant des nuits entières avec une bande de tatoués qui parlent verlan et écoutent du rap. Puis, au petit matin, il rentre chez sa mère avant qu'elle se réveille de peur d'être privé de Banania.

I recently learned that »Veridis Quo« is »Discovery« in #Verlan and »Discovery« in Verlan is »very disco«. 🙃

This is Papaoutai by #Stromae. It's a song about fatherhood, but I think it can extend to parenthood really, because it's one thing that everyone has to figure out. There's no manual, as is clear from my favourite lines: Tout le monde sait comment on fait des bébés, mais personne ne sait comment on fait des papas ("Everyone knows how babies are made, but nobody knows how a father is made").
Every time I hear this song, I can't stop going: "That end bit sounds very Congolese guitar-like, couldn't we have more of that, monsieur Stromae?" BTW, he's of Belgian-Rwandan descent, and mixing in some African styles totally makes sense.
PS. The artist name is #Verlan, French street language using reversals and modification according to a set of phonetic rules, for "Maestro".

May i give a little background?

„Laisse béton“ is a verlan expression.

#Verlan is a funny french #argot. It’s own name already expresses what it means: „verlan“ is created by the french expression „l'envers“ (inverse): In the argot (among others) typically syllables are exchanged, so: „l'envers“ -> „verlan“.

„Laisse béton“ now in french means: „„Laisse tomber“: let it be, forget it.

Now this nice verlan streetart makes a little more sense 😉
