crusty old monsieur gillenormand is one of the most enjoyable characters of the novel, and he has quite a shining moment toward the end when the young lovers are finally reunited, he has utterly confounded his grandson by blessing the marriage after all, and when the young lady enters the sick room, he extends his arms toward the two of them and screeches “permission to adore each other!”
