VVC compression can lower bandwidth costs and improve HD streaming for SMBs, enabling smoother delivery without heavy infrastructure upgrades. #VVC #Streaming #CostEfficiency
Versatile Video Coding (VVC), also known as H.266, has the ability to stream from 4K all the way up to 16K. As the name suggests, the VVC video codec is very versatile. It can support everything from ultra-low to ultra-high resolution videos.
Support for VVC was added in FFmpeg 7.0. The lastest version of FFmpeg 7.1 has declared VVC decoding stable.
While some video streaming platforms like YouTube are currently testing out VVC support, VVC is still not officially supported.
FFmpeg 7.1 codenamed "Péter" was released on September 30, 2024. Major changes include the following:
- VVC decoder was supported in FFmpeg 7.0. In FFmpeg 7.1 it was declared as stable.
- Native AAC USAC is now supported.
- MV-HEVC decoding is now supported.
- LC-EVC decoding is now supported via an external library.
- Vulkan encoding with H264 and HEVC is now supported.
- Cropping metadata with Matroska and MP4 formats is now supported .
Just like with AV1, Intel beats AMD and Nvidia to support H.266 (#VVC) decoding

FastFlix is a free GUI for HEVC and AV1 encoding, GIF/WebP/AVIF creation, and more! It needs FFmpeg (version 4.3 or greater required, 5.0+ recommended) under the hood for the heavy lifting, and can work with a variety of encoders.
