I had looked up place for a night and when I got there this was the smaller problem we had with it...

@benroyce I live in Eastern England which was on the WW2 frontline.

We are *still* regularly unearthing #UXO everywhere especially when there is construction work or when folk are exploring the coast, places get evacuated and EOD (Explosives Ordnance Disposal) has to make the area safe, all this 80 years later in supposed peacetime and there's a non-zero change war in Europe will escalate in the remainder of my lifetime..

@codinghorror why does this thing look like a British (Inter- & WW2) Artillery Shell?

  • Cuz I've seen wrecks with metric tons of these as #UXO in the Red Sea....

“An unexploded U.S. bomb from World War II that had been buried at a Japanese airport exploded Wednesday, causing a large crater in a taxiway and the cancellation of more than 80 flights, Japanese officials said.”

No aircraft or people were nearby and no one was injured. In true Japanese fashion, the taxiway is already repaired and back open.

A US bomb from World War II explodes at a Japanese airport, causing a large crater in a taxiway

An unexploded U.S. bomb from World War II that had been buried at a Japanese airport has exploded, causing a large crater in a taxiway and the cancellation of more than 80 flights but no injuries. Japanese officials say there were no aircraft nearby when the bomb exploded Wednesday at Miyazaki Airport in southwestern Japan. The airport was built in 1943 as a former Imperial Japanese Navy flight training field from which some kamikaze pilots took off on suicide attack missions. Several unexploded U.S. bombs have been unearthed in the area. The cause of the detonation is under investigation.

The "most bombed per capita" people in the world are "defenseless peasants" in the 1970s words of #ChomskyAndHerman in #PEHR #AfterTheCataclysm.. #SubsistenceFarmers, I wonder when this term came into use? I'm guessing after the 70s...

> The Plain of Jars on the Xieng Khouang Plateau is a major cultural heritage site, now recognized by UNESCO. According to UNESCO, #UnexplodedMilitaryOrdinance (UXO) still contaminates 25 percent of the area of Xieng Khouang province, producing a “constant threat” to the personal safety of its 200,000 people. Needless to say, the presence of #UXO crimps economic development of the province.

EOD involves identifying, disarming, and disposing of explosive devices like IEDs, landmines and artillery shells. This critical work helps prevent accidents and saves lives by eliminating these dangers. But as you'd imagine it's a dangerous job. #ExplosiveOrdnance #UXO 2/9

Another very notable video circulating this week has been of unexploded bombs. To civilians these 500lb bombs are extremely dangerous. To the resistance these bombs are a never ending source of material needed to continue the fight.
