General strike on May 29th, trains and planes will stop: repercussions for schools and healthcare too.

A new Friday of passion. On May 29th, a new 24-hour general strike has been called by the Usi Cit, Cub, Sgb, Adl Varese, Si Cobas unions, to which Usi 1912, Sbm, Fisi, and Fi-si also adhere.
Trains and airplanes will stop.
It starts from 9 pm on Thursday to 9 pm on Friday with a stoppage that, in the transport sector, will also involve personnel from the Fs group, Trenitalia, Trenitalia Tper, and Trenord. As always in these cases, essential services are guaranteed during weekday hours from 6 am to 9 am and from 6 pm to 9 pm as a guarantee band for users.
A strike with political and economic motivations. In the unions’ “manifesto,” the protest is announced “against the war and the increase in military spending; against exploitation at work, precariousness, and the failure to adjust the wages of public and private sector workers; against the genocide in Palestine and the supply of weapons to Israel; against the absence of social policies, starting with the housing emergency; against repressive policies of the various ‘Security’ decrees such as D.L. 23/2026 and previous ones of 2025; against the abuses of the Guarantee Commission, rulings that restrict the right to strike, and the attempt to stifle struggles in the Logistics sector (for the abrogation of L.146/90 and L.83/00); against the absence of industrial policies capable of addressing current transitions; against deaths on the job.”
In Italy’s two largest cities, Rome and Milan, disruptions could be particularly significant. In the capital, Atac reported that service will be guaranteed exclusively during legal hours: from the start of service to 8:29 am and from 5:19 pm to 7:59 pm. In the territory of Rome Capital, the strike will affect the entire Atac network and the networks of the Autoservizi Troiani/Sap, Autoservizi Tuscia/Bis, and Atr retailers. On the Atac network, the strike also affects connections made by other operators under subcontracting and the ClicBus Atac on-demand bus service. In Milan, Atm explained that some lines may not be guaranteed from 8:45 am to 3:00 pm and after 6:00 pm until the end of service.
As highlighted later by the Ministry of Transport, the air sector will cross its arms from midnight until 11:59 pm on May 29th.
Other Sectors Involved
Therefore, a general strike will cross its arms, involving workers from all public and private categories. The Ministry of Education issued a note announcing the mobilization, which could cause disruptions in the sector. The Fire Department will also stop, with a 4-hour strike from 9 am to 1 pm for shift personnel. There could also be an impact on the national health service, including medical appointments: however, minimum services are always guaranteed.

Sciopero generale.

I settori coinvolti dallo sciopero
Restano invece esclusi i trasporti.

Today’s 24-hour general strike, all sectors at risk.

Today, a 24-hour general national strike was declared by several grassroots trade unions and is aimed at involving workers in the public and private sectors, with potential disruptions, especially in schools, universities, healthcare, and administrative services. The strike-over is related to numerous sectors but does not involve transportation, as clarified by the Guarantee Commission on strikes in essential public services.

The trade unions that declared the strike:
The mobilization was declared by Slai Cobas for the trade union of the working class, Unione Sindacale Italiana (USI 1912), Unione Sindacale di Base (USB), and Clap, to claim action on wages, working conditions, combating precariousness, and social policies.
The protest is also joined by the strike announced by Flc Cgil in the knowledge sectors on the occasion of the International Women's Day.

The sectors involved in the strike:
According to the declarations filed with the competent authorities, the strike concerns workers in the public and private sectors, including personnel with temporary or atypical contracts. Possible repercussions could therefore affect schools, universities, research, Afam, vocational training, healthcare, and public administration offices.
The fire brigades
For the National Fire Corps, the strike will not cover the entire day but is scheduled from 9:00 to 13:00, according to the modalities indicated by the Guarantee Commission for emergency services.

Public transport excluded from the strike
Public transport, however, remains excluded. The declarations filed provide for the exclusion of the entire sector, which includes railway, air, maritime, and local public transport.
Therefore, there are no generalized stoppages planned for trains, buses, subways, ferries or flights, which should run regularly.
The Guarantee Commission issued a clarification on the eve of the mobilization, specifically to clarify that the general strike of March 9th does not concern the transport sector, avoiding possible misunderstandings among users.
