Sitting in a hospital reading about starving babies in the little-reported famine in #Afghanistan, made immeasurably worse by #USAid suddenly cutting $1.7bn in aid last year to zero, only to read about $1.7bn in US taxpayer cash to compensate Trump’s circle for tax investigations.
You couldn’t make it up, and if it wasn’t so unbearably tragic -millions watching their children starve before them, I can’t imagine anything more painful- it would be like a comic book villain’s ridiculous evil plan.

That outbreak was ultimately contained, but now there’s a new one. On Sunday, the WHO declared it “public health emergency of international concern.” The strain of this Ebola outbreak has no vaccine, no treatments. Here’s the scary part. The U.S under Trump has dramatically cut funding to its global health security programs. The work that USAID used to do—doing door-to-door contact tracing, keeping hospitals supplied with protective gear, making sure burials are safe and don’t infect more—it’s the only way to stop this outbreak. Let’s hope the response infrastructure we tried to build over 20 years does what it can, on its own, to stop this. But the outbreak is also happening in a conflict zone.
