Zambia, een land waar 11 procent van de bevolking lijdt aan de levensbedreigende infectieziekte hiv, krijgt al jaren vanuit de Verenigde Staten gratis medicatie tegen het aidsvirus. Maar de Amerikaanse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Marco Rubio dreigt die hulp stop te zetten als Zambia niet instemt met een nieuwe, Amerikaanse gezondheidsdeal.
Wat er op tafel ligt, leidt tot grote woede in het Zuid-Afrikaanse land. De VS willen de komende vijf jaar nog 1 miljard dollar bijdragen aan de Zambiaanse gezondheidszorg, maar alleen als de Amerikanen de komende 25 jaar toegang krijgen tot Zambiaanse gezondheidsdata én Amerikaanse mijnbouwbedrijven kobalt en koper mogen delven in het land. De Zambianen hebben tot woensdag 1 april de tijd gekregen om te beslissen.

De regering-Trump heeft met 27 landen in Afrika en Zuid-Amerika zorgdeals gesloten. In ruil voor hulp krijgt Amerika (exclusief) toegang tot data over nieuwe virus-uitbraken. Voor Amerikaanse farmaceuten is dat een goudmijn, voor de wereld een groot probleem.
