A #boardgamedesign update:
Today I played the Phone A Friend card and spoke with my subject matter expert on what the goals of various punk bands were and he had an interesting take on "it was predominantly of breaking down barriers to the corporate (and removed) stranglehold on access and experience" which, given the plethora of books I've read for research, generally fits. Now I think I have a better idea of what sort of attributes I need to have actions and events reward.
In other news, my RFP game (likely the one that gets finished this year) is still grappling with "how do you make offers and communicate what you're after when you only have half of the information?" There, it's similar to Hanabi in that you see what other people value (or in this instance, what you ultimately perceive them to value as an independent external view) whereas each player sees the flip side of their card which is what they see as the value in their situation and it's different. I spoke with some #UnPub people at Origins this year and most looked at it and said "I don't know how you solve that" which is fair, but it doesn't further my work there... I suspect this is going to be Bohnanza-esq in its solution (ala "you can't rearrange your hand) to make it work.
I got back from #Unpub today, and it was a blast. It's my new favorite convention, which is saying a lot since I LOVED PAX Unplugged.
I tested *everything*. I'm looking forward to iterating on all my designs.
