@hischeekiness @forquare Introducing patrol-based cooking is something that takes a while to do: you need to build the kids' experience and create the right culture (for the leaders too).

We did it like this (over the course of about a year - we had a young troop without experienced PLs):
Camp 1 - every patrol is given a box of the same ingredients, laminated recipe cards, and a leader directly on hand so that they can ask questions throughout cooking

Camp 2 - give them a choice of meals beforehand, then provide the relevant ingredients for each patrol (so they're cooking different things). Leaders float but are a bit more hands off.

Camp 3 - each patrol plans their menu and gives a shopping list to the leaders beforehand, who then sort quantities and do the shopping. Leaders on hand if necessary (with spare ingredients in the store tent!).

Camp 4 - each patrol is given a budget and taken to the supermarket to buy their own stuff. Do not give in to requests for extra money: let them make the budgeting decisions. Leaders cook their own meals (on the same budget) and kids can come over to ask for advice when needed (and learn by seeing the leaders in action!)

You definitely can't jump to Camp 4 without building the skills beforehand!

Ran an evening meeting about Money Matters for my husband's Scouts, and now I'm exhausted. Did cover the important points though: take it in turn to buy rounds in the pub, and think about the tradeoff between money and happiness.

You know when wording unintentionally makes you have a little chuckle?

“Last night we welcomed Joe to our Tuesday night colony”*

Kinda ominous. 😆

*details changed but general sentence construction not

Tonight was my Cub Pack’s final weekly Meeting of Term.

Our Cubs played UniHoc (basically a variation of indoor hockey) one on one then two on two, then Elephant Ball (a circle game with a large foam ball), before ending with badge presentations and the gifting of cards and items made by the Cub Pack in Gloucestershire we made Christmas Cards for a few weeks back.

This week at Cubs they played Human Battleships.

The boardgame Battleships at person-sized scale.

And they learnt 4-figure grid references in the process.

Tonight the Cubs did the entirety of the Emergency Aid Stage 2 badge.

We had a (hospital) doctor visit & go through all the various elements of the badge.

The other adults in attendance role-played those in need of medical attention. I did a bit too convincing job of portraying asthma, because I started believing it myself. Though my efforts for the others were much less so, as I felt I was grinning & laughing rather than looking in pain.

Hey #ScoutingUK #UKscouting friends, my group have just bought a new Beaver flag and pole, etc. from the Scout Store. Does anyone know how to fix the flag to the pole? There are zero instructions anywhere I can find... 🤷‍♂️

There is a hole through the top of the pole but no holes in the flag; do I just shove a cable tie through the flag? Is there something I am missing here? What did you do? 🙂

Last night was a Trustees/Leaders Meeting, mostly to go over the Safer Scouting Premise Audit & Fire Risk Assessment some of us had been working on for a while.

We asked for all Leaders, and we got them. Was the busiest Group Meeting I’ve been at for a while.

Felt productive (they always are, but this particularly so).
