"What’s exciting about #theFediverse is that most of it hasn’t been built yet. Now, the majority of users see it as a #TwitterReplacement. And that’s great and the first step in building critical mass.
But, the sky is the limit. As you have seen anything can be built. The only limit is our imaginations. The Fediverse’s power isn’t just in the instances you join or the apps you use or whatever tool we build. It’s us. Our creativity will determine its future."

@colvincd I'm pretty happy with Mastodon as my #TwitterReplacement, but I'm in the market for a good #RedditReplacement. I'd love it if #RIFisFun found/made a new back end to hit.
#TwitterReplacement journey started :)))

Is #Mastodon going to be the #TwitterReplacement ?

I've seen articles this morning stating that #BlueSky is starting to let people on their waiting list in.

The big content creators, celebrities and politicians haven't migrated to Mastodon.

Some had bots set up to relay their tweets to here, but I don't know if that is still a thing since Twitter started charging for access to their API.

I think the big content creators are going to stay where they are as long as they can do their thing for free and without interference.

At some point Twitter will not be able to pay it's bills, will be sold, and will come under new management.

BlueSky isn't going to get the celebrities , politicians, and other prime content creators either.

I like that other people are exploring how to replace Twitter. At the same time isn't Mastodon already taking us back to a simpler time with added benefits of #Fediverse integration?

I feel like any service that doesn't tie into the Fediverse is a regression from the perspective of their users' control over their relationships with their connections, at the very least.

@atomicpoet @jaredwhite That's what I just said. I know there's more than one federated #TwitterReplacement. There's at least 15. I don't need 15 Twitter replacements. I don't need two Twitter replacements. I need one Twitter replacement.

I agree that, from a technical perspective, #Pleroma might be a better #Twitter replacement than #Mastodon. The native #markdown support alone wins in my book. (Though the 5000 character default would kill me - it takes me long enough to make 210 posts)

But I have a few questions: how do I choose a Pleroma instance? How do I find my Twitter friends on Pleroma? How do I connect my Pleroma account and my Twitter account so my posts automatically tweet as well? Where can I find a list of good accounts to follow on Pleroma? What are the best (regularly updated) Pleroma apps?

Replace "Pleroma" with "Mastodon", and those questions are Googleable. Until the same is true of Pleroma, it's useless to me and the #Twefugees like me.

  • People have been creating tools and guides to help with this, it’s difficult mainly because it’s new, and the network effect helps a lot with this too - once people get on here, they want their friends here too and are willing to help them with their onboarding steps.
  • People have been pretty generous about donations so far (in places where the admins have asked for it), and there are an encouragingly high number of people opening up new instances too, avoiding concentrating the pressure on a few overburdened instances.
  • Unclear what complicated questions they mean here. These institutions don’t have to run public instances open to everyone, just a place for their own members/employees to toot from and federate with the rest of the ‘verse. Just like people have [email protected] email IDs, let @[email protected] become a norm too.
  • This is kind of a vague point, and a complicated topic. I’ll just say I kind of agree about the echo chamber issue, and that’s a big reason I’m on #Qoto which doesn’t defederate on a whim.
  • This is of course to be expected when two populations collide, and such growing pains are a good sign. Generally people have been somewhat respectful and receptive of these norms, and it’s likely (imo) that the people who are willing to take up these norms will be the same ones who decide to stick around long term. People who just want a place to yell at the clouds without regard to their environment are unlikely to find as much engagement as they’re used to (especially without an algorithm to boost posts drama-baiting posts), and are more likely to move on elsewhere.

The #accessibility of a #TwitterReplacement is not just about whether it allows image descriptions (#AltText) to be added, although it must do that. Nor is it all about how #accessible its default UI is, although hopefully the answer is very.

An often overlooked factor of #SocialMedia usage is that many #disabled users rely on third party applications, and hence a feature-rich #API that lets those apps thrive. This allows people to participate in the ways that are most accessible to them.

It's also why many #blind #ScreenReader users, for example, are migrating to #Mastodon, rather than #Facebook, #Instagram and similar. The capacity for extension simply doesn't exist on those platforms, and any third party developer support that is present is often hostile and subject to being tightened at any moment.
