@gulovsen And the first person your need to be truthful with is yourself. The first step is to acknowledge that you have a problem, and you are not in control. If this sounds kind of AAish, it is. The same techniques that people use to address alcoholism and drug dependency are available to social media addicts. Its not disparaging to say that there is a powerful chemical force binding people to Twitter. It is something people need to understand and acknowledge.

@gulovsen People say that comparing Twitter addicts to drug addicts is disparaging, and also that it is it is insensitive to ridicule people who have the disease of addiction. These criticisms seem valid.

Dependency and addiction are horrible and can ruin your life. It is insensitive to fail to acknowledge the mental illness aspects to those who suffer from addition. But, it is also true that the only way to "get clean" is to be truthful... (more)

@gulovsen Thing is that it really is an addiction. For high follower count posters the dopamine fueled cycle of dependency is very real and in some ways stronger than hard drug addicts. Journalists, the first step is to admit you have a problem. That addiction to Twitter hits has overwhelmed your principles. Much as an alcoholic or drug addict will turn their back on family and friends, you are in the thrall of something powerful that is distorting your judgement.

There is a way out, but it can not be imposed on you. You need to make the determination. You need to take the first important step. There is no hope if you continue with willful denial.
